Clinical responsibility increases each year while dedicated experiences in pediatrics, critical care, trauma, ultrasound, EMS/QI, obstetrics, stroke, and electives broaden the skills needed for independent emergency practice.
Intern year emphasizes core emergency medicine, early procedural experience, and development of a strong foundation in resuscitation and critical care. Interns begin in the ED with supported buddy shifts and weekly boot camp before rotating through emergency medicine, pediatrics, MICU, obstetrics, stroke, anesthesia/ultrasound, and trauma.
Second year brings greater responsibility in the ED and resuscitation bays, with dedicated experiences in pediatric emergency medicine, EMS/QI, ultrasound, PICU, CVICU, and trauma. Residents continue developing autonomy, critical-care judgment, and department-flow skills.
Senior residents transition toward independent practice, lead resuscitations and department flow, teach junior learners, and use elective time and longitudinal advanced tracks to pursue individual career interests. Advanced ultrasound, advanced EMS, and administration tracks remain available for residents seeking additional expertise.
