Our Advanced Emergency Medicine Clerkship gives visiting students an authentic experience as a member of the emergency department team. Students assume meaningful responsibility for their patients while working directly with a teaching resident and attending physician, with frequent bedside feedback and opportunities to participate in procedures, ultrasound, simulation, EMS, and resident didactics.
The clerkship is best understood as a progression: you join the team with direct teaching support, take ownership of patients, build procedural and ultrasound skills, then leave with individualized feedback and mentorship for the Match.
Each shift pairs the student with both a teaching resident and an attending physician. This structure provides increasing clinical autonomy while preserving immediate supervision, bedside teaching, and real-time feedback throughout the rotation.
Evaluate and manage your own patients as part of the ED team, present directly to your resident and attending, and participate in bedside procedures.
Dedicated weekly sessions led by residents and faculty focus on the practical skills, decisions, and workflows that matter as you transition into internship.
Complete dedicated experiences with our Ultrasound and Simulation faculty, alongside the same hands-on educational programming used by our residents.
Experience prehospital medicine through suburban and rural EMS ride-alongs, with opportunities for flight-EMS exposure when available.
Participate alongside residents in weekly conference, simulation, journal club, FOAMed-based learning, and other interactive educational sessions.
Work closely with residency leadership throughout the month. Students pursuing emergency medicine receive individualized feedback, interview preparation, mentorship through The Match, and a meaningful SLOE based on direct faculty observation.
Our leadership team takes the time to know each rotating student as a learner and as a person. Direct faculty observation, dedicated teaching shifts, and interaction with program leadership allow us to provide meaningful feedback and write a SLOE based on more than a handful of brief clinical encounters.
